SMX Advanced – The Best Show on Earth!

If you are an Internet Marketer, by far, the best show is SMX Advanced. I have attended every year since its inception in 2008 and have not been disappointed yet. One change I have noticed is the down play of black hat tactics and guest speakers since the first year.

What I remember Vividly from the 2008 Conference

In 2008 the big talk was Markov Chains which, according to Wikipedia “…can also be used to generate superficially “real-looking” text given a sample document: they are used in a variety of recreational “parody generator” software (see dissociated press, Jeff Harrison [1], Mark V Shaney[16][17] ).

These processes are also used by spammers to inject real-looking hidden paragraphs into unsolicited email in an attempt to get these messages past spam filters.”

Being a white hat SEO professional, I have never used such tactics, but I found it interesting to listen to what people had to say about them because I like to know what is going on in the field, both black hat and white hat.

What I missed most at the 2010 Conference

Another change I noticed was the “Give it Up” session where pundits share their very coolest search marketing strategies and tactics. There was even a rule that you couldn’t blog about the session for at least two weeks after the show ended. This made me feel like I was getting my money’s worth! This year they changed it to “Mega Session: SEO Vets Take All Comers” and to be quite honest, it was a little lackluster.

What I will Attend Again at the 2011 Conference

Even so, this is a fantastic conference where you can meet some amazing people and I think my favorite part of the show was the “Birds of a Feather” table topics. They laid out about 15 tables with room for 11 people at each table. The moderator was an expert in the field and answered questions regarding the topic.

These table topics were offered at lunch on both Tuesday and Wednesday this year. I sat at the table regarding “Real-Time Search” and “Paid Search” and met some very interesting people who were able to answer some of my questions and vice versa. If you are interested in search and have the basics down, this is a conference you need to attend.

I’m going again next year…I hope Danny Sullivan brings back the “Give it Up” session.
