Press Release
The Portland Development Commission is awarding $1,600 scholarships for Small Business Management (SBM) Programs at PCC’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC). SBM for retail business owners starts January 28th, 2013; other SBM programs for growth stage businesses also start in January.
SBM programs give business owners the tools and skills they need to take their business to the next level. These unique programs are non-credit, 10-session business training programs that combine 30 hours of business education with 20 hours of business advising. Participants of the cohort receive specific training on how to build and formalize their business, and gain valuable knowledge on topics such as branding, internet marketing, inventory management, finance, operations and employee development. Confidential one-on-one business advising complements the adult-learning classroom experience. Experienced business advisors at the SBDC work with business owners to help create a pathway for success and position their business for sustainable growth.
Lindsey Ross, owner of Yarnia in SE Portland, just completed the 2012 SBM Retail program and said, “It gave me a venue for checking in with myself at least once a month, setting goals, and taking a step back from my day-to-day to-do lists to evaluate where my business is in the bigger picture. I’ve made huge headway in my accounting, SEO tactics, and inventory control from having the chance to consult with experts in these fields…something I would not have been able to afford to do had I been paying consulting fees for them.”
In partnership with local service providers, chambers of commerce, business/neighborhood associations and city economic development departments, the SBDC works with all the available resources for its clients.
